Free Write Photo Friday Frenzy~

Today for Free Write I asked each child to choose a photo from my camera roll
of something they wanted to remember always and I printed them~
Then I set our 5 min timer for thinking time and then again for writing.
Even Calla joined in~
Their stories were beautiful and certainly wonderful memories forever~
The next thing was author chair share...
everyone read their story and we celebrated~
Ended the morning with lots activities.

An Egg is Quiet~

We checked out lots of spring books from the library recommended by Sarah @ Read Aloud Revival
and one of them was An Egg is Quiet.
I also saw this cute bird and egg activity and Evie begged to make it so...
 Such a great book~
We glued them into our journals and made a pocket for the patterns we traced~
in case they would like to make more on their own.

Learning ALL the Time~

Lots of mornings before we start school, they can be found in the sunroom all together creating something~
And the day we finished putting in the rocks for table~
Holly and Evie grabbed our rock books and started matching them up~

SJ also created her own lean to with sticks~
Learning ALL the time!

My Little Writers~

Evie chose to sketch in her journal all by herself and~
Calla grabbed a dry erase marker and practiced her writing too.

Building writing skills is much more than pencil grip.
Writing on big spaces like sliding glass doors is a favorite around here.

Monday Art Study~

I NEVER tire of my children gathered around our table doing whatever, but making art is a favorite.
.
“Every child should leave school with at least a couple of hundred pictures by great masters hanging permanently in the halls of his imagination . . . At any rate he should go forth well furnished because imagination has the property of magical expansion, the more it holds the more it will hold” (Vol. 6, p. 43). ~Charlotte Mason

Bitty Bible Time & Art

While the big kids are in their rooms having their quiet times, I read the Jesus Storybook bible with them~
Evie is all about an activity and art is her favorite~
So we mixed colors and painted rainbows.
They LOVED it!!!

The Spirit Animal Reader and Writer~

Last week SJ began making all the green cloaks and spirit animals from the many books she's been reading (first influenced by EK)~
She even wrote about it for her free write!
Today she came down for breakfast and declared she was writing the next book in the series~
She told she knew she couldn't really by an author at nine and I immediately corrected her... YES YOU CAN! Her face lit up and she's been writing ever since. She told me she knew she had so many mistakes so we talked about editors. She chose me to edit, type, and mail off her manuscript. So far she has filled two little notebooks and her dad is bringing home more.

Honestly I had thought about setting up a book making area and still might but there is no way I could have set up this scenario. Sometimes it's best to just let it happen all on it's own!!!

This just goes to prove giving children time and nurture to choose something on their own is worth it. In her time she believes she is an author. That's all she needs... to believe in herself. Celebrating this great milestone today!!!

Samson~

One of stories this week in The Child's Story Bible was Samson~
The kids remembered we had it on DVD so we had to watch it~
while they copied a verse from the story and sketched.
Hiding the word in their hearts!!!

Poetry and Bible~

Shakespeare and Little Debbie make poetry teatime even more fun~
And for Bible we are memorizing Psalm 100 and singing He Lives~
And the proof is it making a difference?
I hear them quoting and singing all day long!
Hide it in their heart!!!
{PS. Look at the little convo going on in the back:}

The Geographer~

Our new painting was The Geographer by Vermeer so rabbit trailed the prefix Geo and introduced an new math tool, the compass~
Everyone practiced with it and EK/SJ practiced fractions too!
Circles was our medium for art~
And after the big circle punch party, a piece of circle art was laminated for the art notebooks!

Spreading the Feast~

Charlotte Mason says, "To introduce children to literature is to instal them in a very rich and glorious kingdom, to bring a continual holiday to their doors, to lay before them a feast exquisitely served. But they must learn to know literature by being familiar with it from the very first. A child's intercourse must always be with good books, the best that we can find.”

We have been watching the birds fly to the bird feeders we hung in our tree.
I decided to lay the feast of curiosity for them by propping bird books and binoculars near by~
You can see what happened~
They got their nature journals and drawing materials to sketch without me saying one word~
Provide the feast... they WILL eat!!!

Vermeer Study~

We LOVE our Simply Charlotte Mason Art Study: Vermeer.
This week we learned about The Girl with the Pearl Earrings and watched a video about how pearls are formed~
They all drew and painted something they chose and we laminated for our art notebooks~
Pulling out the notebooks had them reliving all their beautiful art memories~
We also took a day and wrote 6 word descriptions for our painting too~
I even had time to cut out our silhouettes and hang in our living room~
One of my favorite things to make every single year!!!

For Fun Friday we painted our own rendition of The Girl with the Pearl Earring~
 I think everyone did a brilliant job~
Art study is definitely one of favorites school activities!!!

Little Pear~

This is one of our favorite read alouds mainly because it is set in China
and this week one of the chapters was exceptionally fun~
Little Pear was playing shuttlecock so we pulled out our beanbags and had a try.
It is a lot harder than it looks!!!

Nature Bird Study~

We are following a wonderful nature book and this week we were to observe nesting birds~

It just so happens the same birds come back to a nest nestled up on the gutter right outside our bedroom window~
The kids stand and watch the birds flying in and out of the nest!

We went out looking for other nests and chose pinecones for bird feeders~
We spread them with peanut butter and covered in birdseed then hung on our tree~

I had grand plans that they would draw birds while I read the huge stack of books pictured above~
But as you can see, they had their own ideas to draw so who I am to get in the way~
I'd say everything they drew are masterpieces~
We even made our own little bird watching window complete with books to identify with~
A fun day in Nature!
