Merry Christmas from Ankerich Academy~

Today was the last school day for Ankerich Academy of 2014
and we celebrated with sweet books~
and declared it our Christmas Party Day {aka cookie making}~
Rosie asked afterwards if it was a big mess?~
Yes a big one but more importantly... Big Memories~
They couldn't have loved making and decorating more...
now if we can just save one for Santa. :)
Signing off for 2014...
Merry Christmas from Ankerich Academy!!!

A Star Shining in the Night~

This week we have pretty much done our normal school work with a small 'booktivity' afterwards.
Today we read Little Porcupine's Christmas spotlighting the Christmas Star
and sang Do You See What I See.
For art I pulled out our Starry Night poster as well as tons of supplies~
I drew with them as we recreated our our versions and imagined what it must have been like
that night in Bethlehem when Jesus was born under The Star~
I have found just letting them be free to create as they wish really brings out their personalities~
as well as their own need for individual techniques (Evie=More)~
I think we have some Van Goghes on our hands!!!

Matt 2:1-2
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magia from the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

Shaoey and Dot: The Christmas Miracle~

Today I was feeling a little nostalgic with Holly's 6th months forever yesterday
so I pulled out one of my favorite books...
Before reading we watched a few of Steven Curtis Chapman's videos:
LOVE how this story takes all the familiar Christmas distractions
and makes them insignificant compared to The REAL Christmas Miracle!
We also researched why we decorate with wreaths and made beautiful 3D ones~

Another pretty decoration for our learning space!
They LOVED how similar they are to the Chinese lanterns we often create.

The Gingerbread Man~

I can NOT find my copy of The Gingerbread Man anywhere
so what is any resourceful homeschooling mom to do?
Find a YouTube video to watch~
After listening to story and singing the song,
I gave each a gingerbread man pattern staple to piece of sandpaper to but out.
I let them rub cinnamon sticks on them and sprinkle with ginger
as well as decorate with buttons, ricrac, puff paint, and wiggly eyes.
We added a jingle bell so we would hear him run away if he tried. :)
This was a very fun story for sequencing and acting out!
A favorite story for sure!!!

Candy Cane Day~ {Fun Friday}

Today was all things candy canes so we began with a beautiful story...
First we made a new batch of peppermint play dough with every helping to add ingredients~
Spent some time making pretend cookies and such~
Next I pulled out beads and pipe cleaners for them to make candy canes
while eating one as well~
We were due a paint day so we cut out circles then spirals... (super perception activity).
With spiral flat back on their tray, we painted stripes and decorated with sequins
to make a candy cane spiral Christmas tree~
Then hung them from the ceiling.
Later after everything was said and done, I found Evie in her bed resting~
 A little sugarplum for sure!!!

AND EK has become quite the artist...
The horse and dog on the left are Amelia's~
and the two on the right are EK's... Amazing! (both artists that is).
A great Fun Friday for everyone!!!

Countdown to Christmas~

I had one idea in mind for school today but one question changed all that...
SJ~ "Mom, may we make countdown chains for Christmas?"
Of course!
How to make a countdown chain go with a book?
No book...
But what about a song?
The 12 Days of Christmas???~
We watched this several times and I printed some pics to go with it from here~
Our calendar is a staple for our school mornings and they LOVE counting to something special~
It just made sense to let them make countdown chains.
I printed pictures of the song to glue on their links~
I cut strips for them and numbered.
Each cut the circles, glued to correct strip then stapled their chain together~
I can't tell you how excited they were to use the stapler!!!
Look at Holly's face when Evie tries to do too much for her~
Talk about good fine motor work!!!
All this 12 Days of Christmas singing reminded EK of a favorite movie...
What to do except watch it!!!
We ALL loved it!!!
15 Days everyone!

Jan Brett Day~

I found a new Jan Brett book yesterday @ Target
and chose it mostly because of the many animals in it...
(meaning EK would love it!)
We ended up pulling out some other Brett books and our morning turned into a reading party.
(It was fun to compare the animals in all the books.)
Brett's books are loved by both sets of my kids...
Little ones just love the main story and big two love the storyline to the side.
We didn't have a lot of time left and they wanted to do a 'project' so...
We made wreaths to hang on our bedroom and bathroom doors~
A good day and 6 kids are proud to add a little more Christmas cheer to their space!!!

Fun Friday~ {Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree}

(affiliant)
and so do the kids!!!
I printed the characters in the story and we bubble cut to sequence~
We tore paper trunks and created trees with paper strips/sequins~
It was fun to give our trees a haircut to make them more triangular!
We glued our story in order and retold it to a partner
and then sequenced going to cut a Christmas tree into a little book.
The trees turned out beautiful!!!
AND so did our yummy Christmas tree snacks~
Lunch was a huge success with this big treat!!!
{pretzel rods, apple slices, pb or nutella, and m&ms}

Super Fun Friday with sweet BC too
who just happens to be 9 months old today~
YES! He IS an angel!!! :)

The Christmas Spirit~

Today we read The Christmas Humbugs (affiliant) and had a discussion about having Christmas Spirit~
Then we pulled out the  humbug patterns for tracing, cutting, and gluing.
This may seem like a canned art activity with no creativity but
it was amazing fine motor practice for the boys and bitties to hold a pattern to trace
then cut, assemble, and glue just by looking at the example~
EK helped PC, SJ helped WP, and EC helped HM.
We added tons of bling and then made a Peace Promise.
Each thought of a way they could keep the Christmas Spirit in our home
and we wrote it on our Humbugs.
NOW... let's see if it works. :)

Christmas Tree Day~

Today we read two of our favorite Christmas books:
We brought our art supplies out to Savannah's and worked on this~
We actually strung some beads on the pipe cleaners first and then curled into trees
attaching them to snow doilies~
EK and SJ did great using the low temp glue guns
to attach their pom poms, sequins, and buttons, then helped their brothers.
I helped these two and it was an adventure~
You know Evie... always up for a big project!!!

I brought a couple of books for EK and SJ to read with me ...
The text may have been a little simple for EK but let me say she and SJ
loved the literal/figures of speech.
Great fun was had by both!!!
Her face says it all... Mom! I can read this all by myself!
LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

Christmas in the Country~

Christmas in the Country by Cynthia Rylant is always one of my favorite books
each year probably because I am a country girl at heart~
I made the kids muffins to enjoy while listening to the story
and while we read, they loved comparing all the details to memommy and pop!
A really good comparison!

I had a Christmas lights graph and each got a bag of light bulbs to sort, count, and graph~
The big girls and boys were independent and I worked with bitty girls then
EK helped the boys record their data.
It is always fun to see them excited for the one that 'won'.

Next we brought out the Spot It Games~
Big girls played Spot It English,
Boys played original Spot It
and Bitty girls played Spot It Jr. Animals.

I also pulled out a new FUN Math book, Bedtime Math today~
We read the math problem about hot peppers and needed a dry erase board but
since we are at Savannah's this week, I didn't have one.
I looked in the App story and found a free chalkboard app.
Perfect and we were able to work out our problems then have free time with this new app.
We are loving our time with BC this week~
and gave him a little school work as well!!!

Entering the Advent Season~

The month of December is time spent preparing for the greatest Gift ever
and we have a new book to help us prepare as well as celebrate~
This morning we lit a candle and read the first day of

along with our old favorites~

AND
