Gong Hei Fat Choi~

Today we got a little head start on CNY by watching a video about the traditions celebrated in China ~
{Their faces show how much they liked it!}

We water colored The Year of the Horse and created lanterns~
 We again pulled out all our Chinese books!

We love our beautiful crafts~

Maps and Compass Roses~

For our second reading of Katy and the Big Snow,
the kids noticed compass roses all through the book so we ran with it.
We divided a paper plate, added directions, and sequins to make our own.
 I had them find every book and puzzle they could with maps then we looked through and found many more.
We also read all about maps and keys~
Our next project is drawing a bird's eye view of their room.

Winter Fun Friday~

Our week was pretty non eventful...
just continued our normal routine with a few Winter books thrown in for fun.
Today we woke up to pretty frigid temps so I decided we would learn about thermometers and temperature~
EK asked if we could sit a bowl of water out on the step to see if it would freeze... watched all day but no ice.
We also watched what happened to ice in the sun then put the melted water back in the freezer.
Amazing how such a simple experiment can make even Evie understand solids and liquids.

Our first book of the day was A Snowy Day and we created our own thermometers to manipulate~

EK ran to get her snow globe so we decided to make our own~
 As we read Polar Bear, Polar Bear, EK used the Globe pen to let us hear each animal sound... very cool!

We did a little dancing to The Freeze and others~
Had a little snack and called it a Winter Fun Friday.
Next week~

When Winter Comes~

We read When Winter Comes and made a list of ways we know it is winter outside~
EK and SJ have experienced snow so they are really hoping we get some this year.
We pulled out some coffee filters and made snowflakes~
We tried really hard to cut them all exactly the same. :)
Just like us... NO snowflake is identical!

Psalm 139:14
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.

{Saved the snowflakes to be used with Snowflake Bentley!}

Fun Friday~

Nothing TOO fun but it is Friday!
EK has had a renewed interest and love of the piano this week~
 The difference being her taking the initiative herself!
I hear her going for a new lesson or practice several times a day.
She is using this free website to learn: Hoffman Academy.

Small Group~ {Wipe Off Books}

Today after we had our morning devo and reading time
 I made sure EK and SJ were working on their own
so I could introduce a new activity I found at Target yesterday.
I picked up three Wipe Off books: ABC, Mazes, and Math, opened to the middle, and cut them in half~
I took one page from each book and gave to the littles with their dry erase marker.
I sat with them in a Small Group and helped them complete their activity then we switched until they had done all three.
 There was no expectation except to give them exposure to letters, numbers, and problem solving.
I have noticed the boys recognizing lots of letters all around.
That is proof that they are getting ready to learn sounds and begin the wonderful journey of reading.

Writing in Lots of Ways~

Everyone got new journals for this semester.
Littles are still practicing their name each day and I have pulled out the stencils for them to trace and color~
 EK is the ultimate animal lover and would sit and copy from her non fiction books all day~
 Evie was super excited about her activity today.
We are using our Christmas cards for prayer time and then I cut it into a puzzle~
 She put puzzle card together and glued in her journal.
Using sweet family and friends to make this little girl smile. :)

A New Year~ {2014}

Over the holidays I did it again... reorganized our school area~
 My mom had been storing this chest for me and I had the idea to transform it into the school chest.
We LOVE it!
Top drawer is all for EK, middle for SJ, and three bottom for 3 littles.
In basket on the left underneath is a week's worth of preschool activities and the one on the right is my basket.
We also have a listening and reading basket.

I had thought our first day back would be low key expecting kids to resist getting back in the swing.
As I was finishing up breakfast, EK had pulled out the Pick and Draw cards and had everyone organized playing {even Evie}.
I let them continue as long as they were interested even pulling out the smelly markers to color the faces.

We started our new Bible study book~
A big thumbs up so far!!!

I had planned for us to read A New Coat for Anna in December but just didn't get to it.
We are enjoying it this week~

 Of course their favorite part was the sheep so we found a cool YouTube and learned all about sheep shearing.
The rest of the morning was pretty much spent on the floor writing, drawing, and loving our school time!
